Keep On Flossing

Project Overview:
Wentworth Dental in Nanaimo, BC, commissioned a second mural to enhance their office environment. The goal for this mural was to create a vibrant, engaging design that serves as a colourful reminder for clients to stay consistent with their flossing.

Execution:
The clients selected a high-energy colour palette sourced from Benjamin Moore. Upon arriving on-site, I discovered the wall dimensions were larger than initially projected, and cabinets were erected, making it impossible to use a digital projector for the layout.

To adapt, I made the following strategic adjustments:

1. I modified the original composition to better fit the expanded scale and to navigate architectural obstacles.

2. Since large cupboards obstructed certain angles, I centered the key features of the mural along the most frequent foot-traffic paths, ensuring maximum visibility for clients.

3. I hand-sketched the design directly onto the wall using a custom-built chalk grid.

Color Depth: Achieving perfect opacity with such bright pigments presented a technical challenge. To eliminate patchiness and ensure deep, saturated tones, I applied multiple layers to reach the desired finish.

Outcome:
The project was completed in 63 hours over five days (46 hours of on-site painting from me and 17 hours of painting from an assistant). Despite the environmental challenges, the final artwork closely represents the original digital concept, and the team at Wentworth Dental is thrilled with the transformation.
